Breed Selector Quiz
Last reviewed on 30 April 2026.
Answer a few quick questions and we’ll recommend breeds that fit your climate, space and goals.
How the recommendation works
The quiz matches your three answers — climate, space, primary goal — against the most distinctive traits of established backyard breeds: cold-hardiness, heat-tolerance, foraging ability, broodiness, temperament, table size, and laying rate. For most beginners, two or three of these traits do almost all of the work. A reader in a hot climate with a small yard who wants eggs has very different best options than someone in a cold climate with acreage who wants dual-purpose birds.
Why "best beginner breed" lists disagree
Online lists often pick favourites without saying what they are optimising for. A breed that is genuinely the right choice for a Texas backyard with toddlers is not necessarily right for a Vermont smallholding with hawks. The quiz makes the trade-offs explicit. Use the answers as a shortlist to research further, not as a verdict.
Things the quiz cannot capture
- Local availability. Some breeds are common at hatcheries in one country and almost impossible to source in another.
- Coop layout details. A small flock of large, calm birds may need fewer perches but more floor space than a larger flock of light, active birds.
- Predator pressure. Heavier breeds fly less and are easier targets for ground predators; lighter breeds are more flighty but better at escape.
- Your tolerance for noise. Some otherwise-friendly breeds are vocal, which matters if neighbours are close.
